We have all been in that situation…you are driving minding your own business when you see and/or hear lights and sirens behind you. You have no idea what you might have done wrong. You are not even sure they are after you. Here are a few tips on how to react when that occurs…
- Slow down and don’t panic! They may not be after you. They may be racing to get to a crime scene or to stop someone else. The main thing is not to panic and keep a lower rate of speed.
- Identify the vehicle. It may be unmarked. State and even local police are using more unmarked or “dark” vehicles that cannot be easily identified at first glance. Again, do not panic.
- You discover it’s you they are after. Pull over in a safe, well -lit area. Do not speed up or attempt to outrun the vehicle. Police will tail you if they are pulling you over until you are able to find a safe spot to stop. You may ask the officer for ID and a badge number to ascertain that they are a legitimate officer or trooper.
- Be polite and keep your hands on the steering wheel. Do not reach or make any sudden movements as the officer is approaching your car. Let the officer ask for documents when they arrive and can observe you. Ask politely what you did wrong and hand over your docs. Do not become belligerent or attempt to argue.
- Keep your hands on the wheel in full view as the officer returns to their vehicle. When they return to provide you with a ticket or warning, ask what the process is to plead not guilty and be polite. Ask if the violation involves points to your license. BE POLITE! Accept the ticket and say thank you.
- Once you are released, proceed slowly back on your way.
- If you feel it was given in error, or you want to fight it, CONTACT US. 9 times out of 10 if you were polite and respectful, that will be noted in Court and you can get the ticket dropped or reduced. We can help you!
Drive safe!
