Understanding Intellectual Property Law
Intellectual property law deals with the rules for securing and enforcing legal rights to designs, inventions, and artistic works. The three types of intellectual property that can be legally protected are as follows
Trademarks: Trademarks protect words, symbols, smells, colors and phrases. Trademarks are usually things that describe or identify the source of the goods of one company from those of other companies.
Copyrights: These protect the manner in which ideas are expressed; but copyrights don’t protect ideas themselves. Copyrights protect written works, music, drawings, programmed code and art.
Service marks: These differ from trademarks in that service marks are words, phrases or symbols that identify the source of a service rather than the goods of a company.
